Setup your Shopify Shipping Zones and enable Postcode Shipping Rates

###### We'll show you how to complete your setup by creating Shipping Zones in Shopify and choosing Postcode Shipping as the rate provider.

Once you've ** created your Shipping Zones ** in the Postcode Shipping app, you'll need to setup your Shopify shipping settings so that your store receives the Rates you create in Postcode Shipping.

To do this you'll need to create Shipping Zones in Shopify and select Postcode Shipping as the rates provider.

Even if you already have your Shipping Zones set up in Shopify, you'll still need to enable Postcode Shipping as the rates provider, so follow along with this guide.

Set up Shipping Zones in Shopify

From your Shopify dashboard, navigate to Settings > Shipping and delivery and select the shipping profile in which you want to set your shipping rates.

Scroll down to the 'Shipping to' section.

Here you will add Shipping Zones which reflect those you have set up in Postcode Shipping. Notes: If you already have your Shipping Zones set up from before you installed the Postcode Shipping app, you can work with the Shipping Zones you already have. Skip to the next part, Enable Postcode Shipping Rates , below.

Click Add Shipping Zone.

What is Carrier Shipping and which Shopify plan has it?

Carrier Shipping or Carrier-Calculated Shipping (CCS) is a module within your Shopify store which facilitates your store's ability to retrieve rates from an external shipping app.

This module is often confused with traditional carriers such as TNT, FedEx, Australia Post and many more. These are traditional shipping carriers but they are not what Shopify calls 'Carrier Shipping'.

Shopify limits which stores have access to this feature. Below you'll identify which plans can support it, and which can't.

Stores on the Shopify 'Advanced' and 'Plus'

Stores on the 'Shopify' plan

Stores on the 'Shopify' won't have the Carrier Service feature, but you can request access by contacting Shopify support.

Shopify 'Starter' and 'Basic' plans

Shopify decided that starting January 1, 2023, stores on the Shopify 'Starter' and 'Basic' plans would not be able to request access to the Carrier Service API.

There are a number of rule types that you can use when entering ‘Match Rules’ or ‘Exclusion Rules’ for a Region. Understanding how these rules work and when best to use them will allow you to quickly create sets of rules that target anything from individual postcodes to large regions of a country.

Before we take a look at the different rule types available, it’s useful to have an understanding of the three broad ‘types’ of postcode format.

Postcode format types

Whilst there are a large number of different postcode formats in use around the world, any given postcode format will fall into one of three main types:

Numeric

This postcode format type is made up exclusively of numbers. In the vast majority of cases these numbers are sequential and describe specific areas.

Pseudo-numeric

This format type contains a mix of numbers and letters (often these letters match the two-letter country code). However the letters are a ‘fixed’ portion of the format and apply to all postcodes. Ultimately it is the numbers within these postcodes that actually identify a given address.

Alphanumeric

An alphanumeric format contains a mix of numbers and letters that follow a

Your myshopify.com domain. This is the domain you visit to view your Shopify admin. For example: your-shop-name.myshopify.com
A plan that supports ** Carrier Calculated Shipping. ** Available by default on Shopify Advanced and Plus plans, or by request to Shopify Support on the 'Shopify' plan.

Installing the Postcode Shipping app

Authorize the app within the Shopify app install flow.
The first time you log in, the app will attempt to install a carrier endpoint on your Shopify account - this is a URL in Postcode Shipping that Shopify will call to get shipping rates. If your Shopify account has carrier shipping enabled then you should shortly see a success message:

Wildcard rules

###### A wildcard rule allows for the creation of rules than can match any character from a given position within a postcode.

An asterisk (*) character is used to define a wildcard rule.

In the example below, the postcode for the destination address must start with BS1 followed by a space and then any other combination of letters and numbers in order for this Region to be considered a match:

BS1 *

Valid usage In order to be considered valid, the section of the postcode before the wildcard (*) character must match a valid format for the country that this Region has been created for. The following example would fail validation for a Region set to the United Kingdom as it is not a valid UK postcode:

1BS *

The rule must also contain only one wildcard character and this must come at the end of the rule. For example, in the rule below, two wildcard characters have been used making the rule invalid:

BS1 **

Finally the wildcard character must appear at the end of the rule. The following rule would be considered invalid:

BS* 1

Common use-cases Wildcard rules are particularly useful for alphanumeric postcodes and can be used to target both wide and narrow areas depending on the placement of the wildcard character. For example, this rule:

Will target any postcode in the city of Bristol, United Kingdom. Whereas this rule:

BS13 *

Will target only properties within a specific postcode district of the city.
