Shipping Insights
What is Shipping Insights?
Shipping Insights analyzes your order data to provide visual metrics about your shipping costs, destinations, and package weights. Use these insights to optimize your shipping rates and better understand your shipping patterns.
Privacy & Data Collection
No personal information is collected. Shipping Insights only aggregates shipping metrics (costs, locations, weights) without storing customer names, addresses, or other personally identifiable information.
Enabling Shipping Insights
- Navigate to Analytics > Shipping Insights
- Click Enable Shipping Insights
- The system retrieves order data from the last 60 days
- Charts appear once sufficient data is available
New orders are continuously analyzed and added to your insights.
Data Requirements
Charts display once you have at least 72 hours of order data. If you see a message that metrics will become available later, continue processing orders - insights will appear automatically when enough data is collected.
Available Metrics
Shipping Cost Metrics
- Shipping Cost Trends Shows average shipping cost over time. Identify whether your shipping costs are increasing, decreasing, or stable.
- Proportional Shipping Cost Shows the percentage of total order value attributed to shipping. Helps identify if shipping costs are too high relative to product prices.
- Shipping Cost by Order Volume Shows order volume for each shipping cost range (e.g., 0-5,5-10, $10+). Identify your most common shipping price points.
Shipping Location Metrics
Shipping Destination Distribution (Heat Map) Visual map showing geographic distribution of your shipping destinations. Toggle between three views:
- Order Count - Where you ship most frequently
- Shipping Total - Where you spend the most on shipping
- Shipping Avg - Average shipping cost by location
Top Destinations Bar chart showing municipalities you ship to most often. Quickly identify your primary shipping markets.
Shipping Weight Metrics
- Shipment Weight by Order Volume Shows order volume for each weight range. Understand the typical weight of packages you ship.
- Average Shipping Cost by Weight Shows average shipping cost for each weight tier. Identify how weight impacts your shipping costs.
Filtering Data
Use the date range selector to view insights for specific periods:
Preset ranges:
- Last 7 days
- Last 30 days
- Last 60 days
- Custom date range
Charts update automatically when you change the date range.
Using Insights to Optimize Rates
Identify Regional Patterns
Heat map shows high shipping costs in specific regions:
- Consider creating dedicated regions with optimized rates
- Investigate if carrier rates can be negotiated for high-volume areas
- Evaluate if certain regions should have minimum order values
Top destinations reveal concentrated shipping:
- Create specific regions for your most frequent destinations
- Optimize rates for these high-volume locations
- Consider flat rates for common destinations
Optimize Weight-Based Pricing
Weight distribution shows clustering:
- If most orders fall in 2-5kg range, ensure rates are competitive for this weight
- Create product groups for common weight ranges
- Adjust rate tiers to match actual shipping patterns
Cost per weight shows unexpected patterns:
- If costs don't scale linearly with weight, investigate carrier rates
- Consider whether product groups need better weight-based segmentation
Balance Shipping vs Product Value
Proportional shipping cost shows high percentages:
- Shipping may be deterring purchases - consider subsidizing costs
- Evaluate free shipping thresholds
- Review if rates accurately reflect actual carrier costs
Trends show increasing costs:
- Carrier rates may have increased - update your rates
- Product mix may be shifting to heavier items - adjust rates accordingly
- Consider renegotiating carrier contracts
Common Use Cases
Setting Up a New Store
Use insights from your first 60 days to:
- Identify primary shipping destinations
- Understand typical order weights
- Set competitive rates based on actual costs
Optimizing Existing Rates
Analyze patterns to:
- Create new regions for high-volume destinations
- Adjust weight-based pricing to match actual distribution
- Identify underpriced or overpriced shipping zones
Evaluating Carrier Performance
Compare shipping costs over time to:
- Spot carrier rate increases
- Evaluate if negotiated rates are competitive
- Decide if switching carriers makes sense for certain regions
Planning Promotions
Use insights to:
- Set free shipping thresholds based on average order weights
- Identify regions for targeted shipping promotions
- Understand impact of shipping costs on conversions
Best Practices
Review Insights Regularly
Check insights monthly to spot trends and adjust rates accordingly. Shipping patterns change with seasons, products, and markets.
Compare Date Ranges
Use custom date ranges to compare shipping patterns year-over-year or month-over-month. This reveals seasonal trends and long-term changes.
Cross-Reference with Sales Data
Combine insights with Shopify's sales analytics to understand:
- Whether high shipping costs correlate with abandoned carts
- If certain regions have better conversion despite higher shipping costs
- How shipping impacts customer lifetime value
Act on Insights
Don't just review data - make changes based on what you learn:
- Create new rates for underserved regions
- Adjust pricing for common weight ranges
- Experiment with free shipping thresholds
Monitor After Changes
After adjusting rates, monitor insights to verify improvements. Check if changes reduce costs, improve conversion, or better align with shipping patterns.
Understanding the Heat Map
The heat map shows geographic concentration using colors:
- Blue - Low values
- Yellow/Orange - Medium values
- Red - High values
Toggle between metrics to understand different aspects:
- Order Count shows where customers are located
- Shipping Total shows where you spend the most
- Shipping Avg shows relative shipping costs by location
Use the map to zoom, pan, and explore specific regions.
Troubleshooting
No Charts Appearing
"Metrics will become available as more data is pulled in"
You need at least 72 hours of aggregated order data. Continue processing orders and check back in a few days.
Charts Show Unexpected Data
Verify your date range selection. Charts update based on the selected period - ensure you're viewing the intended timeframe.
Heat Map Shows No Data
Check if you've shipped to enough different locations. The heat map requires geographic diversity to display meaningfully.
Costs Don't Match Expectations
Remember that insights show historical data. If you've recently changed rates, historical insights won't reflect those changes until new orders process.
