Export and Import Settings

Import and export allows you to download your shipping configuration as a file and upload it to another store. This transfers your settings without manual recreation.

When to Use Import & Export

Use this feature when you:

  • Set up a new Shopify store and want to replicate existing shipping settings
  • Migrate from one store to another
  • Create a backup of your configuration
  • Test changes in a development store before applying to production

What Gets Exported

Your export file includes:

  • Shipping Zones - All zones and their assigned countries
  • Regions - Postcode-based regions with inclusion/exclusion rules
  • Product Groups - Rule-based product groups with their rules
  • Rates - All shipping rates with their match rules
  • Rate Modifiers - Conditional adjustments to rates
  • Global Modifiers - Store-wide rate adjustments
  • Shop Settings - Currency and other general settings

What Doesn't Get Exported

Product groups using Select products strategy are exported, but the manually selected products and variants are not included. Product IDs differ between stores, so these selections cannot transfer.

Enabling Import & Export

This feature requires activation by support. Contact support to enable import and export for your store.

Exporting Your Settings

  1. Navigate to Settings
  2. Scroll to the Import & Export section
  3. Click Export Settings
  4. A JSON file downloads to your computer

Your most recent export is saved and can be downloaded again if needed.

Importing Settings

  1. Navigate to Settings on your new store
  2. Scroll to the Import & Export section
  3. Click Choose File and select your exported JSON file
  4. Click Import Settings
  5. Wait for the import to complete

After Importing

  1. Test in Rate Sandbox - Verify rates calculate correctly with sample orders
  2. Check Product Groups - If you had manually selected products, add them again to the appropriate groups
  3. Configure Shopify Delivery Settings - Ensure Postcode Shipping is enabled as a rate provider in your Shopify shipping zones

Important Notes

Import is Additive

Importing creates new resources (zones, regions, rates). If your store already has settings configured, you may end up with duplicates.

Best practice: Only import into new stores with no existing configuration.

Duplicates

If you import multiple times or into a store with existing settings:

  • Shipping zones with the same name will be duplicated
  • Regions and rates will be duplicated
  • You'll need to manually delete unwanted duplicates

Currency Differences

If your stores use different currencies, rate amounts will transfer as-is. You may need to adjust pricing after import. This is also true to differences in weight unit between stores.

Product Group Selections

Rule-based product groups transfer completely. Product groups with manually selected products transfer as empty groups - manually add products after importing.

Best Practices

Use for New Stores

Import works best when setting up a brand new store. Avoid importing into stores with existing shipping configuration.

Test Before Going Live

After importing, thoroughly test your rates using the Rate Sandbox before making your store live or enabling Postcode Shipping in Shopify.

Document Customizations

If you manually selected products for product groups, document which products belong to which groups before exporting. This makes it easier to recreate selections after import.
